Pressure-treated pine is the budget-friendly workhorse. Here is how to get the best look and life from it.
Treated pine is wood that has been infused with preservatives to resist rot and insects. It is strong, widely available and costs less than cedar. With good drying, sealing and finishing, it makes a handsome pergola.
Treated lumber is often wet when it is new. We let it dry before staining and choose straight pieces to limit warping. Sealing end grain and applying a quality finish makes a big difference in appearance and life.
